| Thirty seven years with the same band is surely a record for a musician in bluegrass or any kind of music. That is the record Jack Cooke holds as a member of the Clinch Mountain Boys. Born in Norton, VA in 1936, Jack still calls Norton home. He even once served a term as Mayor of this small town. Jack's first job as a professional musician was a bass player for Carter and Ralph, the Stanley Brothers, who he joined in 1955. In 1956, he began a four year stint with Bill Monroe, as a Bluegrass Boy. Following his time with Monroe, Jack formed his own band, The Virginia Mountain Boys. He also spent time with Earl Taylor and the Stoneman Family. At one time Del McCoury played banjo in Jack's band. Jack recommended Del to Monreo, and played with Del, when he filled in with Monroe from time to time. In 1970, following Carter Stanley's death, Ralph reorganized the Clinch Mountain Boys and recrutied Jack to be the bass player. For the past thirty six years Jack has laid down a steady beat for the Clinch Mountain Boys.
