The word "legend" isn't given lightly; it's an honor that you earn. In the bluegrass world, you earn it with song after song after album after album of purely great music. Using that criteria, it's certainly no wonder that The Osborne Brothers have been accorded legendary status for many, many years now. Fans of bluegrass and most genres of music know by now that the Osbornes are in the midst of working on a four album chronicle of their own musical history. The 1998 Pinecastle release Hyden focused on the life of The Osbornes as boys in their hometown; here, Dayton To Knoxville (the second of the four albums) takes you through their formulative musical years from their early teens when they began their long performing careers through their twenties. The album does a fine job of documenting the songs that both inspired and influenced the Osbornes musical directions... influences that they would carry with them for their entire glorious careers. It's difficult to use too many more superlatives to describe the Osbornes; everybody knows by now they earned their "legend" moniker through their great singing, great playing and great material. As you would well expect from two grand gentlemen who are documenting their own lives, Dayton To Knoxville is a finely crafted release. Longtime fans will listen with great interest as the story of the Osbornes music and influences continues to be told, and new bluegrass fans will no doubt be grateful for the sense of history this entire series is giving to them. As if all that weren't enough, there's a special bonus on this release... the Osbornes have included two incredibly rare demo tracks recorded waaaaaay back when, tracks they were using when they were still trying to get themselves noticed and known. The real clincher is that both tracks feature the work of another legend... Jimmy Martin appears on these two long lost demos! You can file this one under "history" or "legends" or "exciting new releases",and you'd be right in every instance. Once again, the Osbornes show the stuff that legends are rightfully made of.
